CBS Music – Stabat Mater – 3.00 p.m.

March 10, 2013

Free with a Retiring Collection

A performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater to mark the Lenten season will be the highlight of a concert at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday 10th March 2013 in the St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral.

The Stabat Mater has been widely performed and become very popular since its completion in the early eighteenth century by Pergolesi shortly before his death at the age of 26.  It is a reflective poem about Mary at the foot of the cross, full of emotional intensity and beautiful melodies, sung by two female voices accompanied by string orchestra.  The soloists will be Elizabeth Emeleus and Louisa Margot Button, and the CBS Orchestra will be led by David Williams.

Pianist Michael Lawrence will also play the reflective Schumann Scenes from Childhood, and the CBS Choir will contribute some appropriate motets.  This seasonal concert proved very popular last year.  Admission will be free, with a retiring collection, and all are warmly welcome.
