Christopher’s Classics Series XVIII 2013 – NZ Barok – 8.00 p.m

November 5, 2013

$15 – $40

Programme: Mozart – Divertimento in D; Albrechtsberger – String Sextour, Op. 13 No. 3 in D minor; Haydn – Violin Concerto in G; Richter – Sinfonia a Quattro; Zani – Cello Concerto No. 9 in B flat; Stamitz – String Symphony in A

NZ Barok (formerly AK Barok) is a vibrant, Auckland-based baroque orchestra.  Formed in 2004 by cellist Helen Brinkman and violinist Graham McPhail, it is the only orchestra performing baroque music on historic instruments in New Zealand.  NZ Barok is passionate about providing audiences the opportunity to experience, and hear, the sounds of Baroque and early Classical music as the composers intended it to be heard.

Mozart’s bright and breezy Divertimento in D opens, followed by the adagio and fugue of Albrechtsberger’s String Sextour in D minor.  Next is Haydn’s glorious Violin Concerto in G, then Richter’s Sinfonia a Quattro in B flat, an intriguing blend of late Baroque and early Classical styles.  Andrea Zani was a widely published violin virtuoso whose works fell into obscurity; recent performing editions of his music have been created by local scholar Jill Ward, including the featured Cello Concerto in B flat.  Johann Stamitz’s String Symphony in A, heavily inspired by Italian opera, concludes the concert, and this year’s series.
