“The Vocal Music of Sir Arnold Bax (1883-1953)”
1 July, 1:10pm
The Transitional Cathedral (234 Hereford St)
~ Entry by Koha ~
The recital features music for voice and piano by the late British composer Sir Arnold Bax, and also includes a number of well known pieces by Frank Bridge and Eric Coates.
Bax’s music is at the center of my Doctor of Musical Arts research at the University of Canterbury. This recital is the first of a number of planned public performances and lectures featuring his music.
Bax was a Theosophist, transcendentalist, a fantasist, and above all: a dreamer. He loved cricket and poetry, he hated Jazz and Bach; whose music he described as “sewing machine music”.
He loved nature and Ireland: its landscapes and mythology.
He was close friends with Sibeleus, Vaughn-Williams and Holst.
