CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents “Holmes, Chindamo, Tchaikovsky”
September 27 @ 7:30 pm
CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents “Holmes, Chindamo, Tchaikovsky” on Saturday 27th September 2025, 7.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, Christchurch Town Hall, Kilmore Street, Christchurch
Aotearoa composer Leonie Holmes wrote Ancient Rhythms twenty years ago, inspired by the poem The Journey by Tessa Stephens. The last time CSO performed it the reviewer said, “it had genuine expressive appeal…rhythms, textures and sonorities that seemed to awaken our animal instincts, and we responded accordingly.”
Australian jazz pianist and composer Joe Chindamo has been described as “a musical polyglot in the tradition of Bernstein and Previn.” Audiences are gifted a rare treat with his new trombone concerto, which explores the literary world of Edgar Allen Poe through music. Our soloist is the brilliant Colin Prichard, Principal Trombone of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, who premiered the jaw-dropping work in 2022.
Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony takes us back in time, while simultaneously showing us how timeless the great symphonic works can be – the epitome of a blockbuster symphony that shows off all sections of the orchestra. This is a masterwork for lifetime symphonic fans and newcomers to the orchestra alike; you can’t help but be swept away.
