April 4, 2019 @ 7:30 pm
$20 – $45Christopher’s Classics Series XXIV presents “Julien Van Mellaerts and James Baillieu” on Thursday 4th April 2019, 7.30 p.m. at The Piano, 156 Armagh Street, Christchurch
New Zealand baritone Julien Van Mallaerts is the only person to have won first prize in both the Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the Wigmore Hall Kohn Foundation International Song Competition. Julien sang Schaunard in NZ Opera’s production of La Boheme in October 2018. In this concert, he’ll perform songs from Schubert, Schumann, Britten and others, accompanied by James Baillieu, professor and head of piano accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Together, they are amongst the leading young performers of art song and lieder.
“…alert to the specifics of style, language and character in each miniature narrative. No surprise that
Van Mellaerts, witty and wiry-toned, walked away with the top prize.” – The Times 2010
“….Bailleu, with his warm sound and empathetic ear, is one of our favourite pianists these
days…..Baillieu has a knack of creating a soloistic phrase out of a singer’s intent; he follows, without
losing his autonomy.” – Jenna Douglas, Schmopera, 2017
