Experience the warm tones of romance to the spirited wild passion of the gypsies in this compelling and virtuoso performance!
Gypsy music expresses emotions from intense longing to joyful partying, very often in the same piece. This programme consists of music influenced by folk traditions or composed by Eastern Europeans. The music is powerful and passionate.
A little variation of gypsy “blood” is Dance of Africa by South African Malcolm Dedman. He captures the rhythm of Africa and brings it to life in a short vibrant piece which uses three short West African rhythmic cells which would normally be played on instruments such as congas, clave and cowbell.
Cathy Irons has recently completed a national tour for Chamber Music NZ with her group, Tres Cordes String Trio. Her playing was described as “high spirited” and with “fun overflowing” by the Rotorua Daily Post, and “jaw-dropping, her musicianship and mastery of her lovely instrument defying any other description” by the The Guardian. She is a Christchurch Symphony Orchestra violinist active in recitals and chamber music performances.
Flavio Villani returns to NZ from his successful European tour and has recently completed a masters in piano performance with first class honours at Auckland University under Stephen de Pledge.
