Resonance Ensemble presents “Outliers – familiar music not often performed”

March 26, 2023 @ 3:00 pm

Resonance Ensemble presents “Outliers – familiar music not often performed” on Sunday 26th March, 3.00 p.m. at The Piano, 156 Armagh Street, Christchurch

Outliers features works of four composers:

  • Rossini (William Tell Overture)
  • Ponchielli (Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda)
  • Gounod (Ballet Music from Faust)
  • Beethoven (Symphony No. 8)

We will play the full William Tell Overture, including the dramatic cello opening, a frighteningly realistic storm sequence, a Swiss yodeling song from the flutes and cor anglais, and of course, the familiar final triumphant gallop set off by the trumpets and horns.

Gounod’s Ballet Music from Faust was not originally part of his most famous opera’s first performance.  Come along to the concert to hear the rather extraordinary inside story of how this exceptionally varied and appealing music came to be written.

A third orchestral extract from opera is Dance of the Hours from Ponchielli’s opera La Gioconda.  Aside from the famous dance that ends Act 3, this colourful and dramatic opera is rarely heard.

The final work of this concert, most deserving of the label Outlier is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, arguably Beethoven’s most innovative and experimental symphony.
