The Cecilian Singers 40th Anniversary Concert
We are delighted to invite you to share in our anniversary concert to be held at The Piano on Saturday November 26th 2022 at 7.30 pm.
The Programme is an exciting one, featuring both new and favourite works, accompanied by soloists from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, as well as our talented piano accompanist, Sarah Kang.
We begin with an unusual work by Brahms, his Gesänge für Frauenchor, written when Brahms was in his twenties, conducting and writing for the Hamburg Girls Choir. It is a set of 4 songs accompanied by harp and 2 horns, giving a moody atmosphere for the rather Gothic texts.
This is followed by György Orbán’s Missa Nona (Mass No.9). Like many of Orbán’s works, there is a jazz element that reveals itself through the musical texture. Sarah Kang is our piano accompanist for this work.
The first part of the concert concludes with a setting of a poem by Robin Hyde, Prayer of a Woman, composed by New Zealander, David Hamilton. David also scored this work for harp and 2 horns.
After the short interval, we complete this anniversary concert with Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, accompanied by the harp.
Our harpist is Principal harpist at the CSO, Helen Webby
Our horns are Principal horn, Emma Eden, and Associate Principal Horn, Bernard Shapiro.
After the performance there will be a social event. A bar will be operating.
