SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Glinka\, Britten\, Shostakovich"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Glinka\, Britten\, Shostakovich \nSaturday 18 April 2026 \n7.30pm to 9.30pm \nDouglas Lilburn Auditorium \nChristchurch Town Hall \n\nBenjamin Northey – Chief Conductor \nJian Liu – Piano \nGlinka – Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture \nBritten – Piano Concerto Op. 13 \nShostakovich – Symphony No. 1 in F minor Op. 10 \n  \nGlinka’s rollicking Overture from the opera Ruslan and Lyudmila is one of the best-known orchestral show pieces. Rapid\, driving rhythms and lyrical\, courtly melodies open the curtain on a world of sorcerers\, spells and swashbuckling romance – thrilling from the very first bar. \nBritten premiered his own Piano Concerto in London in 1938\, at the age of just 24\, in a blazing display of bravura. This was Britten exuberant and unafraid. The reception was mixed\, simply because the audience had literally never heard anything like it before. It is unashamedly virtuosic and unsparing in its demands of the soloist\, and our soloist\, Jian Liu\, is more than up for the challenge when he joins CSO for this performance. \nWhen the teenage Shostakovich presented his graduation project to the Petrograd Conservatory\, he hardly expected to take the international music world by storm. Achieving nearly overnight international fame\, his first symphony remains one of his most popular works. Constantly unpredictable\, slipping easily between biting humour and tragic foreboding\, it reveals a precocious command of orchestral colour and contrast that still keeps audiences on the edge of their seats a century later. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporters Gloria Street (Shostakovich) and Doris Barnard & Mark Hickman (Britten). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-hayward-masterworks-glinka-britten-shostakovich/christchurch

SUMMARY:Waimakariri Community Arts Council presents "The New Zealand Quartet from the Storytellers series: Origins"
DESCRIPTION:Waimakariri Community Arts Council presents “The New Zealand Quartet from the Storytellers series: Origins” on Thursday 7th May 2026\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. at Chamber Gallery Rangiora \nPricing: Adults $35.00 | Students $15.00.  Tickets at Humanitix \nBehind every piece of music is a story and across their 2026 Season\, the New Zealand String Quartet is diving into them. Join them at Chamber Gallery Rangiora for an evening exploring a rich cross-section of compositional voices and celebrating the art of storytelling through music. \n‘Origins’ opens with a piece composed especially for the NZSQ: Mika Cornelius’s Universal Veil\, an ethereal and atmospheric trip through the lifecycle of fungi. \nSchubert’s vibrant E flat major quartet shows the teenage composer finding his voice before Gareth Farr brings us home with the infectious personality of Mondo Rondo.Grammy nominee and ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’ (Time Out New York) Missy Mazzoli reimagines a harsh desert landscape into something wild and buoyant in Death Valley Junction. \nOrigins concludes with the cornerstone of the NZSQ’s 2026 Season\, a tribute to Benjamin Britten as they play all three of his string quartets in the 50th year after his death. His first string quartet\, written at 27 years old\, prompted musicologist Peter Evans to declare him “a master of tonal architecture with scarcely a rival on the English scene.” It spans the intimate\, restless and sublime and forms the perfect ending to our meditation on beginnings. \nThe concert programme\, crafted in the NZSQ’s signature style\, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music\, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences. \nContact person: Louise Johns \nEmail: chambergalleryrangiora@gmail.com \nLink: https://www.chambergalleryrangiora.com/nz-string-quartet \n

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Gershwin\, Jacques Brel\, Weill"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Gershwin\, Jacques Brel\, Weill \nFriday 15 May 2026 \n7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. \nDouglas Lilburn Auditorium \nChristchurch Town Hall \nJen Winley – Conductor \nNaomi Ferguson – Mezzo Soprano \nGershwin – Suite from Porgy and Bess (Catfish Row) \nJacques Brel – Amsterdam: The Jacques Brel Song Cycle \nWeill – Symphony No. 2 (Fantaisie symphonique) \n  \nNever ones for following the book\, we’re gently bending the rules of a familiar Lamb & Hayward Masterworks concert to surprise and tantalise with something gloriously unexpected. \nDuring the original 1935 run of landmark American opera Porgy and Bess\, Gershwin wanted to preserve the life of the work he held so close to his heart. His solution was Catfish Row\, a five-movement suite that wove the opera’s most memorable musical themes together. Artfully blending inspirations from opera\, jazz\, Broadway and Black musical traditions – it’s music that feels rich\, alive and full of storytelling\, transcending far beyond the opera house. \nŌtautahi vocal icon\, mezzo soprano Naomi Ferguson\, joins CSO to bring Amsterdam: The Jacques Brel Song Cycle to life. Known for his raw emotion and poetic storytelling\, Brel transformed French music\, and in 2025\, we give his songs a fresh twist – delivered with power and poise by Naomi and our orchestra in this brand new cycle\, orchestrated by Ōtautahi’s Alex van den Broek. \nKurt Weill is best known for his contributions to cabaret and theatre\, but his Symphony No. 2 reveals a darker\, more defiant side of his voice. Composed in exile after fleeing Nazi Germany for Paris\, it brims with emotional tension\, razor-sharp wit and theatrical flair. Bold\, urgent\, and unmistakably Weill\, it’s a powerful reminder that Weill’s symphonic voice was every bit as compelling as his theatrical one. \nWith thanks to PKF Goldsmith Fox\, CSO Soloist Partner. \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-hayward-masterworks-gershwin-jacques-brel-weill/christchurch

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Curator's Series: Ravel\, Morello\, Mozart"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Curator’s Series: Ravel\, Morello\, Mozart \nFriday 5 June 2026 \n7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. \nThe Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \n\nLeonard Weiss – Conductor \nPablo Ruiz Henao – Bass Trombone \n\nRavel – Le tombeau de Couperin M.68 \nNicola Morello – Bass Trombone Concerto No. 1 Op. 84 \nMozart – Symphony No. 29 in A Major\, K.201 \n  \nA graceful tribute to friends lost in World War I\, Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin transforms remembrance into celebration of life. Originally for piano and later orchestrated\, it weaves Baroque elegance with Ravel’s shimmering\, impressionistic colours – delicate\, dance-like\, and deeply expressive. In Ravel’s words\, it is “a memory of the past\, but not a lament.” \nCSO Principal Bass Trombone Pablo Ruiz Henao is centre stage in Nicola Morello’s Bass Trombone Concerto No. 1\, expertly bringing to life the concerto’s dynamic textures and bold rhythms. With a mix of lyrical passages and thrilling technical brilliance\, this piece offers an unforgettable solo performance. \nThe concert closes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 29\, bursting with youthful energy and classical elegance. Composed when Mozart was just 18\, this symphony sparkles with joyful melodies\, crisp rhythms\, and vibrant orchestral colours – a lively and uplifting finale that perfectly captures Mozart’s early genius. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporters Dr Kelvin & Mrs Carolyn Lynn (Ravel) and Lynn & Ian Lochhead (Mozart). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-series-ravel-morello-mozart/christchurch
