SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Airs and Dances"
DESCRIPTION:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents “Airs and Dances” on Friday 9th June 2023\, 7.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThe Christchurch Symphony Orchestra strings pull the audience back into 17th century Italy and France with Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances. Despite being from 1931\, Respighi transcribed old melodies and dance styles that make this work equally fitting for an ornate French Court ballroom. \nHungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi emigrated to the United States after World War Two\, and his gentle and very French-inspired Harp Concertino was premiered in Tallahassee shortly after he settled in his new home. \nMozart’s father wrote to him in 1782 requesting a symphony for their friend Sigmund Haffner\, a wealthy Salzburg merchant who was about to receive a noble title and needed music for the occasion. Mozart replied with “well\, I am up to my eyes in work […] I must just spend the night over it\, for that is the only way\,” but the high-spirited symphony that eventuated was a resounding success. \nBenjamin Northey – Chief Conductor\nHelen Webby – Harp\nRespighi – Ancient Airs and Dances (Suite No 3)\nDohnányi – Concertino for Harp & Chamber Orchestra\nMozart – Symphony No 35 (Haffner)

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Call of the Wild"
DESCRIPTION:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents “Call of the Wild” on Saturday 17th June 2023\, 7.30 p.m. in Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nMusic can transport us to faraway lands. Step into the colourful world of French orchestration with Ravel’s childlike Ma mère l’oye or Mother Goose\, originally written as a piano duo for his friend’s two children\, to encounter a cast of magical characters. \nCSO welcomes thrilling Australian saxophonist Adam Page to perform John Psathas’ Call of the Wild – a vividly programmatic work that charts the experiences of Psathas’ own Greek family over the past century. \nSynesthete Rimsky-Korsakov employed a glittering use of the full orchestra in bringing the tales of the Arabian Nights to life in Scheherazade. Audiences will hear Sinbad sailing the rocky seas\, and have front row seats to Scheherazade’s outwitting of the cruel Sultan Shahryar. \nBenjamin Northey – Chief Conductor\nAdam Page – Saxophone\nRavel – Mother Goose Suite\nJohn Psathas – Saxophone Concerto\n“Call of the Wild”\nRimsky-Korsakov – Scheherazade
