DESCRIPTION:IRMT presents “Katherine Austin Piano Masterclass” on Saturday 29th August 2020\, 1.30 p.m to 4.30 p.m. at The Chamber\, The Piano Centre for Music and the Arts\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThe Christchurch Branch of the IRMT are delighted to announce that Katherine Austin will be giving a Masterclass at The Piano for four advanced level students.  Come along and watch as Katherine puts the four lucky students through their paces. \nIRMT member: $25.00 \nNon IRMT member: $35.00 \nStudents and Masterclass participants: $15.00 \nKatherine Austin Masterclass \nHead of Piano Studies for the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music\, Katherine Austin is one of New Zealand’s leading pianists and performs regularly around NZ and overseas\, touring frequently for Chamber Music New Zealand and broadcasting regularly on Radio New Zealand Concert.  Pianist of the Tennant-Austin Duo for the past 23 years\, her work with the New Zealand Chamber Soloists (since 2006) now occupies a large portion of her performing and concert life. \nAustin graduated Master of Music with First Class Honours in Piano Performance from Auckland University\, where her teachers were Janetta McStay and Bryan Sayer.  In 1982 she won both the NZ Young Performer of the Year (PACANZ) and the TVNZ/NZSO New Zealand Young Musician of the Year\, playing Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the NZSO.  Seven years of study and performance in London and Europe followed\, included a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music London to study with renowned Russian pianist and teacher Irina Zaritskaya\, as well as postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  In 1987\, Austin won the Top Duo Prize in the Stresa International Chamber Music Competition in Italy\, performing with cellist Vincenzo Giuliani. \nHer students from the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music have been winners of prizes and scholarships including the National Piano Concerto Competition\, prize-winners in international competitions\, full scholarships to ANAM (Australian National Academy of Music [post graduate performance school] and to music institutions in Germany and the UK. \n

Returning to perform this work with the CSO is Christchurch-born\, Vienna Philharmonic first violinist\, Benjamin Morrison. \nAt the time of its first performance\, Beethoven’s Mass in C was not well received by audiences due to its revolutionary ideas. Today\, it is embraced by audiences globally and loved for its potent drama and vocal power.

DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “New Frontiers” Concert on Sunday 20th September 2020\, 3.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nConcert of American Classics.\nHelen Renaud conducts music from America – Copland\, Bernstein\, Barber\, Dvorak \nJoin Resonance Ensemble to celebrate the diversity of music inspired by America. From the simple beauty of the Appalachian Mountains\, the lasting impressions of Dvořák visiting America for the first time in his American Suite\, to the jazz-inspired bustle of New York. \nThe programme features Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, On the Town by Bernstein\, and Barber’s haunting Adagio for Strings. The orchestra includes some extra instruments: saxes\, piano and a typewriter\, as an addition to the percussion section. Leroy Anderson’s quirky and innovative Typewriter\, written in 1950\, uses all the iconic sounds of the typewriter.
