SUMMARY:Woolston Brass presents "Tane and the Kiwi"
DESCRIPTION:About Tāne and the Kiwi \nJoin Woolston Brass with Music Director Tyme Marsters on Friday 8 November 7pm at The Piano for an evening of excitement and adventure. You’ll find something for everyone – young and young at heart! \nWoolston Brass and narrator Paul van Uden will perform Thomas Goss’ inventive ‘Tāne and the Kiwi’ – a New Zealand tale! Text by Jennifer Moss and Thomas Goss\, this work is based on the classic radio story and book ‘How the Kiwi Lost its Wings’ by Alwyn Owen\, with this particular version specifically commissioned by Woolston Brass from Thomas Goss for this performance. Tāne and the Kiwi tell the story of the kind kiwi who gave up a chance to soar among the tree-tops but looked after the roots of the trees instead\, ensuring that the forest would flourish for everyone to enjoy. \nExperience the story of the much-loved bird with the smallest wings and the biggest heart\, retold with magical music and narration. Don’t miss this special performance and one of Zealand’s finest and most versatile brass bands located right here in Ōtautahi Christchurch. \nTickets are available at http://www.eventfinda.co.nz \nTane and the Kiwi Poster 2024 \n

SUMMARY:Resonance Ensemble presents "Rebellious Russians"
DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “Rebellious Russians” on Thursday 21st November 2024\, 7.30 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nWe are excited to have the wonderfully talented Gabriel Baird join the orchestra for our last concert of 2024.  Gabriel will play Shostakovich’s exciting and fun-filled 2nd Piano Concerto. \nGabriel lives and breathes piano\, as a prolific soloist\, accompanist and collaborator\, as well as an improvising musician at the Court Theatre. \nHe recently gained his Bachelor of Music from the University of Canterbury\, where he honed his skills as composer\, arranger and musical collaborator. \nYou may also have seen Gabe performing with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Bassoon. \nCoincidentally\, Shostakovich’s 2nd Piano Concerto opens with bassoon\, joined with other woodwinds playing the cheery theme before the piano joins in. \nThis piece was written as a gift for Shostakovich’s son Maxim to celebrate his graduation from the Moscow Conservatory and was premiered by Maxim on his 19th birthday (10 May 1957). \nThe exciting and fun-filled opening and closing Allegro movements enclose the beautiful and romantic second movement\, making this piece a delightful feature of our programme. \nVisit Gabriel on his social media sites:\nFacebook:    or  Instagram:   \nIgor Stravinsky  originally wrote our opening piece\, his Suite No 2\, as “easy piano duets” for his two children\, Theodore and Mika.  He orchestrated the piece in four movements as incidental music for a Paris music hall\, with dedications to composers Alfredo Cassella\, Eric Satie and ballet impressario\, Serge Diaghilev. \nBorodin composed In the Steppes of Central Asia\, in 1880\, intended as background to the silver anniversary celebration of the reign of Tsar Alexander III.  Borodin wrote this in the score:\n“Out of the silence of Central Asia come the sounds of a peaceful Russian song. There are heard\, too\, the melancholy strains of Eastern melodies and the stamping of approaching horses and camels. A caravan\, escorted by Russian soldiers\, crosses the measureless desert\, pursuing its way\, free from care\, under the protection of Russian arms. The caravan moves ever forward. The songs of the Russians and those of the Asia locals mingle in common harmony\, their refrain gradually dying away in the distance.” \nShostakovich \nJazz Suite No 2 (aka Suite for Variety Orchestra) completes our programme in 8 movements of marches\, polkas and waltzes\, arranged from scores set for ballet\, theatre and cinema\, with the familiar Waltz II\, recognisable as a theme to Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and hosts of arrangements for other groups. \nBook your tickets online now\,\nwith no booking fees at Humanitix \n\nListen to the programme using this Spotify Playlist \nVisit the Resonance Ensemble website \nand follow us on Facebook \n\n\n\nClick here to go through to Humanitix for tickets – NO BOOKING FEES\n\n\n\nPricing: Adults $30.00 | $25.00 Senior | $12.50 Students | $5.00 Child \nWe are all looking forward to this evening concert\nat The Piano\n7:30pm Thursday November 21 \nPlease spread the word\, and bring your friends.\nSee you there! \nFor further information:\nText 027 226 1100 or email\nresonancechristchurch@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:CSO presents "Boulanger\, Barker\, Mahler"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents “Boulanger\, Barber\, Mahler” on Saturday 30th November 2024\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch. \n Be drawn into the dark and foreboding sound world of trailblazing French composer Lili Boulanger’s D’un soir triste – written shortly before her death at the age of just 24\, and full of musical expression beyond her years.  It was two years after the Second World War when Samuel Barber was commissioned to write Knoxville: Summer of 1915 by the Boston Symphony. Beautiful prose by the writer James Agee paints a picture of Tennessee in 1915\, where a small boy lies in the grass and describes the sounds around him. Barber masterfully evokes childhood memories in his orchestration\, and celebrated Aotearoa New Zealand soprano Anna Leese will sweep audiences up into the vivid scene.  Anna Leese also joins CSO for Mahler’s Fourth Symphony\, where the final movement is a soprano solo describing a child’s carefree vision of heaven\, with no music on Earth comparable to the music of the angels. It is known as Mahler’s charming and childlike symphony\, complete with jingling sleigh-bells\, but also brings the quintessentially epic Mahlerian orchestral forces that need to be experienced live for full effect. \n Benjamin Northey: Chief Conductor\nAnna Leese: Soprano\nLili Boulanger: D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening)\nBarber Knoxville: Summer of 1915\nMahler: Symphony No. 4 in G Major \nWebsite: http://www.cso.co.nz
