SUMMARY:The Arts Centre Christchurch presents "Matariki 2026: TIGER - DRAGON - HORSES
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Centre Christchurch presents “Matariki 2026: TIGER – DRAGON – HORSES” on Friday 10th July 2026\, 2.00 p.m. to 2.45 p.m. at the Great Hall\, The Arts Centre\, Christchurch \nPricing: $5.00 | $20.00 \nThis Matariki\, two star-watching cultures meet. \nIn te ao Māori\, the Matariki constellation becomes visible once more in the winter sky\, signalling the new year. In Japanese cosmology\, the same star cluster carries the name Subaru 昴. For both cultures: reverence\, remembrance\, renewal. This July\, Good Company Arts and electronic-jazz trail-blazer Mark de Clive-Lowe bring their award-winning Asia-Pacific Trilogy to Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre — projected dance cinema livesets fusing taonga pūoro from Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui and grand piano with electronics from Mark de Clive-Lowe into one immersive event. \nA trilogy of world-class dance films featuring Māori\, Pacific\, and Asian creatives by the internationally acclaimed dancer\, choreographer and filmmaker Daniel Belton. \nTIGER (2022) — solo dance artist Airu Matsuda in a high-energy\, fluid response to the great cat: courage\, the drive to achieve\, the harmony of opposites. Taonga pūoro: Alistair Fraser — Mark’s first encounter with taonga pūoro\, introduced through GCA to Alistair. The film makes a bow to the sister peaks\, Mount Fuji and Mount Taranaki. \nDRAGON (2024) — IDIOT SAVANT Theater Company of Tōkyō\, with company director and dramaturg Koh-Toh-Shi supporting Belton’s vision; movement artists Nao Akao\, Chikako Arai\, and Yasuhiro Kondo embodying Air\, Water\, Earth\, Fire\, and Void alongside Airu Matsuda and Samara Reweti. Taonga pūoro: Al Fraser returns\, and Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui enters the creative circle. The hexagon as sacred geometric baton — from the celestial dragon to the human. \nHORSES (2026) — the Fire Horse year\, and a world premiere as a live performance. HORSES received its cinema premiere at Te Papa Tongarewa\, Wellington\, in February 2026. Tonight it comes to life for the first time with the full live ensemble. Tsukushi-Mai dance artist Nao Kamei carries 1200 years of tradition into the digital space; urban dance artists Ririka Takizawa\, Joshua Faleatua\, Tyler Carney-Faleatua\, and Karim Araoka bring their own distinct movement languages; Airu Matsuda and Chikako Arai return\, completing the Trilogy’s arc of continuity. Taonga pūoro: Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui and Ariana Tikao. \nMatinee 2pm (45 min)\nFull Asia-Pacific Triology live cinema and music. TIGER · DRAGON · HORSES. \nAdults $15\, Child $5 + booking fees. \nEvening 7.30pm (75 min)\nFull Asia-Pacific Triology live cinema and music. TIGER · DRAGON · HORSES plus EMAKI (Mahoroba Emaki)\, an earlier Good Company Arts film inspired by the Japanese picture scroll\, and artist talk with Daniel Belton\, Mark de Clive-Lowe and Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui. \nWaged $20\, Unwaged $15 + booking fees. \nContact person: The Arts Centre \nEmail: info@artscentre.org.nz \nLink: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/tiger-dragon-horses/

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Curator's Series: Ravel\, Morello\, Mozart"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Curator’s Series: Ravel\, Morello\, Mozart \nFriday 5 June 2026 \n7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. \nThe Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \n\nLeonard Weiss – Conductor \nPablo Ruiz Henao – Bass Trombone \n\nRavel – Le tombeau de Couperin M.68 \nNicola Morello – Bass Trombone Concerto No. 1 Op. 84 \nMozart – Symphony No. 29 in A Major\, K.201 \n  \nA graceful tribute to friends lost in World War I\, Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin transforms remembrance into celebration of life. Originally for piano and later orchestrated\, it weaves Baroque elegance with Ravel’s shimmering\, impressionistic colours – delicate\, dance-like\, and deeply expressive. In Ravel’s words\, it is “a memory of the past\, but not a lament.” \nCSO Principal Bass Trombone Pablo Ruiz Henao is centre stage in Nicola Morello’s Bass Trombone Concerto No. 1\, expertly bringing to life the concerto’s dynamic textures and bold rhythms. With a mix of lyrical passages and thrilling technical brilliance\, this piece offers an unforgettable solo performance. \nThe concert closes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 29\, bursting with youthful energy and classical elegance. Composed when Mozart was just 18\, this symphony sparkles with joyful melodies\, crisp rhythms\, and vibrant orchestral colours – a lively and uplifting finale that perfectly captures Mozart’s early genius. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporters Dr Kelvin & Mrs Carolyn Lynn (Ravel) and Lynn & Ian Lochhead (Mozart). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-series-ravel-morello-mozart/christchurch
