SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Rameau\, Poulenc\, Beethoven"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: Rameau\, Poulenc\, Beethoven \nSaturday 12 September 2026 \n7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. \nDouglas Lilburn Auditorium \nChristchurch Town Hall \n\nChad Kelly – Conductor \nJeremy Woodside – Organ \n\nRameau – Entrée de Polymnie (from Act IV of Les Boréades) \nPoulenc – Concerto pour orgue\, cordes et timbales (Concerto for organ\, timpani and strings) in G minor\, FP 93 \nBeethoven – Symphony No. 3 in Eb Major Op. 55 ‘Eroica’ \n  \nRameau’s Entrée de Polymnie from Act IV of Les Boréades invites us into the dazzling world of French Baroque opera. Under the baton of popular guest conductor Chad Kelly\, the orchestra brings to life its intricate rhythms and shimmering textures. \nThe Douglas Lilburn Auditorium and its mighty Rieger organ take centre stage in Poulenc’s Concerto for organ\, timpani and strings – a rare opportunity to experience the full glory of this immaculately designed concert hall. Organist Jeremy Woodside brings Poulenc’s vivid score to life\, shifting effortlessly from brooding intensity to playful charm\, and making full use of the organ’s 4\,307 pipes. \nBeethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ changed the course of symphonic music. Originally dedicated to Napoleon\, it was dramatically stripped of that honour after Napoleon declared himself as Emperor\, betraying\, in Beethoven’s mind\, the liberatory ideals he once stood for. The third symphony is bold\, expansive\, and unrelenting in its ambition. With its heroic themes and revolutionary spirit\, this is Beethoven declaring a new era – on his own terms. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporters Ventilation Technology Consultants Ltd: Lorraine Logan & David Martin (Beethoven). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-hayward-masterworks-rameau-poulenc-beethoven2/christchurch

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Curator's Series: Gabrieli\, Lilburn\, Martinu"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Curator’s Series: Gabrieli\, Lilburn\, Martinů \nFriday 25 September 2026 \n7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. \nThe Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nGabrieli – Sonata pian’ e forte \nLilburn – Sinfonia for Strings \nMartinů – Nonet No. 2 H.374 \n  \nMore than 400 years ago\, Gabrieli’s Sonata pian’ e forte sent brass voices ringing through vast Venetian cathedrals. It pioneered the dramatic use of dynamics (contrasting loud and soft passages – the pian’ and forte of the title) and sounds that call and answer across the space\, immersing listeners in a rich acoustic tapestry. It helped define the sound of the Venetian Renaissance – bold\, breathtaking\, and still captivating today. \nAotearoa composer Douglas Lilburn paints a deeply personal landscape in his Sinfonia for Strings\, drawing its images from the pioneer sheep-farming hill country of his youth. Lush textures and inward lyricism reflect the composer’s deep connection to the Aotearoa landscape. CSO Concertmaster Justine Cormack leads the strings in drawing out both the intimacy and strength at the heart of this treasured work. \nComposed in the final year of his life\, Martinů’s Nonet No. 2 is a rare musical gem uncovered especially to delight Ōtautahi audiences. Scored for nine distinct wind and string instruments\, it unfolds like a lively gathering where each voice shines solo yet blends beautifully into a joyful whole. Woven through the music are the spirited folk influences of Martinů’s Czech roots\, grounding this bright and playful work in the traditions that shaped him. \nWith thanks to CSO Library Supporters Dr Kelvin & Mrs Carolyn Lynn (Gabrieli\, Lilburn). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-series-gabrieli-lilburn-martin/christchurch
