SUMMARY:The Arts Centre Christchurch presents "Rising Stars 2026: Iris Liu Piano Recital"
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Centre Christchurch presents “Rising Stars 2026: Iris Liu Piano Recital” on Tuesday 4th August 2026\, 1.10pm to 1.50pm at the Great Hall\, Worcester Boulevard\, Christchurch \nPricing: $5 | $15 \nWe are privileged to host Iris Liu’s first ever solo piano recital. After just six years of formal training\, Iris has already achieved her ATCL in piano and distinguished herself with her musicality\, rhythm\, and dedication. \nIris Liu\, aged 14\, is currently a Year 10 student at Burnside High School. She began learning the piano at the age of eight under the guidance of Yi Sun\, and she is currently also studying with Lixin Zhang. Although her formal training has not been long\, Iris quickly distinguished herself through her musical talent and ability to understand and interpret music. With a keen and steady sense of rhythm\, refined and expressive musicality\, and a disciplined commitment to daily practice\, she has made astonishing progress within just a few short years. \nShe has now completed the Associate Diploma (ATCL) in Piano Performance from Trinity College London and is actively preparing for the more advanced Licentiate Diploma (LTCL). Iris has also achieved outstanding results in several piano competitions. In Year 9\, her exceptional musical ability earned her a place in her school’s SMP Program\, where she has frequently served as a piano accompanist for important school performances\, gaining valuable experience and recognition for her musical sensitivity and reliability. \nBeyond the piano\, Iris has also explored other performing arts. She studied tap dance for three years and street dance for two years. These diverse artistic experiences have enriched her sense of rhythm\, movement\, and stage expression\, bringing vitality and imagination to her musical performances. \nAfter six years of dedication\, passion\, and perseverance\, Iris now steps onto the stage for her very first solo piano recital. This concert marks a significant milestone in 2026 and represents a brilliant and promising beginning of her musical journey. May she continue to follow her passion\, explore new artistic horizons\, and soar ever higher on her musical path. \nThis event is part of the Rising Stars 2026 programme. A Tuesday lunchtimes concert series that focuses on encouraging\, nurturing and providing a performance platform for emerging young musicians. \nContact person: The Arts Centre \nEmail: info@artscentre.org.nz \nLink: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/iris-liu-piano-recital/

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: de Castro-Robinson\, Mahler\, Berlioz"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: de Castro-Robinson\, Mahler\, Berlioz \nSaturday 1st August 2026 \n7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. \nDouglas Lilburn Auditorium \nChristchurch Town Hall \n\nBenjamin Northey – Chief Conductor \nFaamanu Fonoti-Fuimaono – Baritone \n\nEve de Castro-Robinson – Hour of Lead \nMahler – Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) \nBerlioz – Symphonie fantastique Op. 14 \n  \nWe’re thrilled to perform Aotearoa composer Eve de Castro-Robinson’s compelling Hour of Lead in Te Waipounamu South Island for the first time. It has been described by the composer as “four movements on the notion of pain” and “a sombre reminder of life’s fragility.” A review of its 2024 premiere said\, “the composer\, called to the platform at the end\, seemed like some kind of angelic or otherwise blessed visitant\, come to lift the spell by which her work had held us all in thrall.” \nIn the wake of a tragic heartbreak\, a young Mahler casts himself as the protagonist in his poignant Songs of a Wayfarer. A grief-stricken journeyman wanders aimlessly in nature\, seeking peace but haunted by lost love. Rising Aotearoa baritone Faamanu Fonoti-Fuimaono guides us powerfully\, at times tragically\, through every tender moment. \nBerlioz takes that same heartbreak\, but spins it into a vivid\, hallucinatory drama. Symphonie fantastique marked a musical revolution\, daring in its originality\, scale\, imagination\, and mastery of the macabre. Critics called it “bizarre” and “monstrous” – and meant it as high praise. The intensely cinematic music still resonates\, most famously in the sinister opening of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporter Gwyn Rogers (Berlioz). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-hayward-masterworks/christchurch

She began learning the violin at the age of six and currently studies under Stephen Larsen. Through her studies\, Hayley has developed a strong passion for both solo and chamber music performance and enjoys exploring a wide range of repertoire. \nHayley is an active orchestral musician and has performed with the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra. She has also participated in programmes connected with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra National Youth Orchestra\, gaining valuable experience performing with other young musicians from across New Zealand. \nAlongside her orchestral work\, Hayley is a dedicated chamber musician. She was a member of the ensemble Vzpomínka\, which achieved national success in the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest. Chamber music continues to be an important part of her musical development\, allowing her to collaborate closely with other performers. \nIn 2025\, Hayley was selected as a semi-finalist in the National Young Performer Awards organised by the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand (PACANZ). She has also had the opportunity to perform as a solo violinist at Christchurch’s Mitre10 Sparks Concert with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra\, performing to a large outdoor audience. \nHayley continues to pursue opportunities in solo\, chamber\, and orchestral performance\, and hopes to further develop her musicianship through future study and performance opportunities with the goal of performing internationally. \nNatalija Sekicki was the youngest contestant in the 2025 National Young Performer Awards\, receiving the Potential Prize for the most promising competitor. She also made her solo debut with the Hutt Valley Orchestra after winning the HVO Cup and attended the Musica Mundi International Chamber Music Course and Festival in Belgium that same year. \nNatalija\, aged 15\, studies with Stephen Larsen and began her violin studies through the Suzuki Method with Lynley Culliford. An enthusiastic orchestral musician\, she performs with the Wellington Youth Orchestra and also plays flute in the Wellington Youth Sinfonietta. \nShe plays on a fine violin generously loaned by the Hill Family Foundation for Art and Music. Outside of music\, she enjoys literature\, crafting\, and illustrating graphic novels. \nThis event is part of the Rising Stars 2026 programme. A Tuesday lunchtimes concert series that focuses on encouraging\, nurturing and providing a performance platform for emerging young musicians. \nContact person: The Arts Centre \nEmail: info@artscentre.org.nz \nLink: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/hayley-jiang-and-natalija-sekicki-violin-recital/
