DESCRIPTION:Christopher’s Classics Series XXI presents “Michael Houston” on Thursday 21st April 2016\, 7.30 p.m. at St Michael and All Angels Church. \nAcclaimed pianist\, Michael Houstoun needs no introduction to Christchurch audiences.  Born in Timaru\, he became interested in the piano as a small child and began lessons at the age of five.  Under the tutelage\, first of Sister Mary Eulalie in Timaru\, and then the great Maurice Till in Christchurch and Dunedin\, Michael moved through the examination grades and by the age of 18 had won every major competition in New Zealand. DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music NZ presents Uri Caine with the NZSQ on Monday 21st March 2016\, 7.30 p.m. at Charles Luney Auditorium\, St Margaret’s College\, 12 Winchester Street\, Christchurch.  Preconcert Q&A at 6.30 p.m. with Tom Rainey. \nJazz meets the classics.  Caine’s collaborations extend from the Beaux Arts Trio to John Zorn\, and from the Woody Herman Band to the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.  He studied composition with George Crumb and George Rochberg\, and has gone on to release recordings of improvisations on works by Mozart\, Beethoven\, Wagner\, Mahler and Schumann. \nDuring his tour he is joining forces with our very own New Zealand String Quartet.  This collaboration with Uri Caine will include his original compositions for piano and string quartet\, Jagged Edges and String Theories.  This concert will also feature an improvisation on the Allegretto con variazioni of Beethoven’s ‘Harp’ Quartet Op. 74\, and the magnificent Goldberg Variations of J.S.
