SUMMARY:The Christopher Marshall Concert for Stars of the Future presents "Lixin Zhang" - (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Marshall has supported young musicians for a long time.  This concert has been added to our programme to formally recognise Christopher’s support of these musicians. \nEach year we will showcase a promising young performer or performers.  One of the purposes of this concert is to provide a grant to contribute to their future development. \nOur first recipient is Christchurch’s own Lixin Zhang.  Anyone who has heard him play will agree that he is an exciting young pianist. \nLixin Zhang (piano) in concert on Thursday 22nd July 2021 at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nProgramme: \nChopin – Mazurkas\, op. 24\nChopin – Sonata no. 3 in B minor\, op. 58\nChopin – 24 Preludes\, op. 28 \nLixin Zhang is 19 and is currently studying with Michael Endres and Neville Baird.  Starting this fall\, Lixin will be studying at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles in the studio of Fabio Bidini.  Lixin was first recognised nationally at the age of eleven for his musical achievements.  Since then\, he has gone on to win top prizes at each of New Zealand’s major national piano competitions including the National Young Performer Award\, Wallace National Piano Competition and the National Concerto Competition.  Lixin has also given performances in Asia and Europe.  Rattle Records released Lixin’s first CD in 2018\, which promptly shot to first place in Radio NZ’s Classical Charts.  For this concert\, Lixin has selected some of his favourite works written by the romantic composer Frederic Chopin.

SUMMARY:NZ Opera presents "The Marriage of Figaro"
DESCRIPTION:NZ Opera presents “The Marriage of Figaro” on Tuesday 13th July 2021\, 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. at Isaac Theatre Royal\, 145 Gloucester Street\, Christchurch \nPricing:  $25.00 to $180.00 \nContact: Ali Davies  Email: ali@nzopera.co.nz \nWebsite: https://nzopera.com/event/the-marriage-of-figaro/ \n  \nLUST\, REVENGE\, DECEPTION AND A WEDDING. IT’S AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN PACK INTO A DAY \nMozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera The Marriage of Figaro is one of the most popular and enduring operas ever written. Composed only three years before the French Revolution\, Mozart takes a play (of the same title by Beaumarchais) that had been banned on account of its implied subversion of the established order\, removes much of the overtly political material\, and then deftly weaves an opera in which the women drive the narrative\, culminating in aristocrat and servant swapping clothes. Mozart achieves revolutionary statements on multiple levels much in keeping with Enlightenment ideas about the role of women and men in society and politics. The opera ends with a statement of compassion and forgiveness much needed at the start of this Century. \nNew Zealand Opera has invited director Lindy Hume to create a new production that explores feminist ideas in Mozart’s opera\, part of a series that has preoccupied her artistic practice in recent years. Zoe Zeniodi will conduct the opera. Eleanor Bishop will assistant direct. It is anticipated this team will explore Figaro’s potent politics in the rehearsal room and that the opera will be a catalyst for conversation on women directors and conductors in opera. \nThe production will play in its original language (Italian) with English surtitles. \nThe opera will feature the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus\, along with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. \nDuration: The performance is 3 hours long with a 20-minute interval. \nSurtitles: This opera is sung in Italian with English surtitles. \nComposed by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart \nLibretto by: Lorenzo Da Ponte

SUMMARY:Resonance Ensemble presents "A Tuba at the Jockey Club"
DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “A Tuba at the Jockey Club” on Sunday 4th July 2021 at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThomas Allely\, principal tuba of The Queensland Symphony Orchestra is traveling from Brisbane specially to play with this excellent local orchestra in the première of conductor Tony Ryan’s newly revised Tuba Concerto. The concerto was originally written for Thomas when he was still a school student in Christchurch and which he played with the NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra in Auckland. \nRyan describes the revision of his concerto as an almost complete re-write which recognises the exceptionally advanced virtuoso and musical abilities of this now widely-experienced soloist\, and the talented players of the Resonance Ensemble orchestra. \nThe remainder of the concert is devoted to music that was influenced by the Paris Jockey Club in the nineteenth century when Paris was one of the great musical capitals of Europe\, with French opera at the forefront in terms of spectacle and grandeur\, especially with its inclusion of elaborate dance interludes. \nThe young\, egocentric aristocrats of the Jockey Club insisted on the insertion of these extravaganzas and would disrupt proceedings if they didn’t get an opportunity to see their favourite ballerinas on the stage. Even Verdi and Wagner were forced to add lengthy dance spectacles to their operas for Parisian performances. \nAlong with guest soprano Helen Charlton\, Resonance Ensemble will present an enticing programme of spectacular overtures\, arias and ballet music which resulted from the demands of the Jockey Club\, with music by Auber\, Offenbach and Massenet. \nA Tuba at the Jockey Club \nResonance Ensemble https://www.resonance.net.nz/ \nSunday 4 July at 3.00pm \nThe Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch https://thepiano.nz/events/tuba-jockey-club-resonance-ensemble/ \nBook at Eventbrite – \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/resonance-ensemble-a-tuba-at-the-jockey-club-tickets-155725307587 \nFor more details contact Tom Steele (027 226 1100) or the conductor Tony Ryan (020 4026 8472)

SUMMARY:The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora presents "Dr Ian Chapman and the Cosmic Jive Trio"
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora presents “Dr Ian Chapman and the Cosmic Jive Trio” on Thursday 1st July 2021\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. at Great Hall\, The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora\, Worcester Boulevard\, Christchurch \nPricing: \n\n$25.00 per person\n\nIn this sparkling interactive musical performance and accompanying talk\, Dr Ian Chapman and his band delight in entertaining and educating audiences on the empowerment and healing potential of music and the arts. Personally inspired by David Bowie\, one of the most complex and enduring performers in the history of popular music\, Dr Chapman is a musician\, academic\, and author of a dozen books including Experiencing David Bowie: A Listener’s Companion (2015)\, and David Bowie FAQ (2020). \nCosmic Jive Trio brings to the stage superb acoustic arrangements of David Bowie’s finest songs\, arranged especially for the show. The honest simplicity of the stripped back and largely acoustic instrumentation allows Bowie’s masterful song-writing to take centre stage. \nDavid Bowie & the Art of Being Different is a wonderfully entertaining celebration of eccentric creativity\, a testament to how the arts can empower\, improve mental health\, heal past traumas\, and provide an essential blueprint for how to deal with bullying. Above all\, this show is a triumphant affirmation of the power and potential of difference. \nhttps://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/dr-ian-chapman-and-the-cosmic-jive-trio/

DESCRIPTION:“The Vocal Music of Sir Arnold Bax (1883-1953)” \n1 July\, 1:10pm  \nThe Transitional Cathedral (234 Hereford St) \n~ Entry by Koha ~ \nThe recital features music for voice and piano by the late British composer Sir Arnold Bax\, and also includes a number of well known pieces by Frank Bridge and Eric Coates. \nBax’s music is at the center of my Doctor of Musical Arts research at the University of Canterbury. This recital is the first of a number of planned public performances and lectures featuring his music. \nBax was a Theosophist\, transcendentalist\, a fantasist\, and above all: a dreamer. He loved cricket and poetry\, he hated Jazz and Bach; whose music he described as “sewing machine music”.  \nHe loved nature and Ireland: its landscapes and mythology.  \nHe was close friends with Sibeleus\, Vaughn-Williams and Holst. \nListen to Bax speaking about his music here (1949 radio interview) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWtmvtuGZZA&t=318s \nSample one of the works to be performed in the recital (The White Peace) :  \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWtmvtuGZZA&t=318s

SUMMARY:CSM Camerata Strings presents "Autumn Reverie"
DESCRIPTION:CSM Camerata Strings presents “Autumn Reverie” on Sunday 20th June 2021\, 1.00 p.m. at Aldersgate Centre\, 309 Durham Street\, Christchurch \n \nAutumn Reverie is a selection of music capturing the spirit of the season\, with all the natural beauty of the rich russet colours. James Corigliano’s Reverie partly suggested the title of the concert as it is a bittersweet daydream that encapsulates the Autumnal mood. Keeping the seasonal analogy going\, Grieg’s evergreen Holberg Suite is full of energy\, pathos and drama and is always a favourite with audiences. Several works in the concert feature soloists from the ensemble\, most notably Charles Avison’s Concerto in A\, for which the soloists are Cherry McCallum\, Claire Hobbs\, Iain Ward\, Margaret Hunt and Morag Macpherson. This is a lively example of late 18th Century English string writing\, very much in the tradition of Boyce. Alan Rawsthorne is maybe not a name familiar to New Zealand audiences but his Light Music for Strings is a gem of the 20th Century English school\, and draws on traditional Catalan tunes. Opening the concert is Patrick Shepherd’s Carpe Diem\, which urges us to “seize the day” and was originally written for his doctoral graduation in 2008.
