SUMMARY:Resonance Ensemble presents "Wayfarers"
DESCRIPTION:Wayfarers\nMusic by Mozart\, Mendelssohn & Mahler\nOn Sunday afternoon 14th September 2025\, 3pm at The Piano\, Resonance Ensemble\, conducted by Tony Ryan\, present another concert of well-known\, if rarely heard music…\nMendelssohn’s Italian Symphony radiates warmth and vitality\, drawing on Italy’s lively dance forms and folk songs. Mendelssohn’s creativity is evident\, not only in this joyful and sunny symphony but also as a talented artist: the image above and on our posters is one of the composer’s Italian paintings of the Amalfi Coast. \nSoprano Helen Charlton joins the orchestra for Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). In this cycle of four lyrical songs\, Mahler wrote his own words based on German folk poetry.  These songs are among the most familiar and appealing of his vocal works\, full of rhythmic variety and textural invention.  \nHelen Charlton is an experienced Christchurch-based singer\, performing regularly as a soloist and choral director. Born and raised in Christchurch\, she attended Linwood High School for her senior years (with Conductor Tony Ryan as her Music Teacher!)\nHelen graduated from Canterbury University with a music degree majoring in Performance Singing\, and Massey University with a Graduate Diploma in Secondary School Teaching. \nOur programme opens with Overture from Mozart’s magnificent German opera\, The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). Helen Charlton will also join the orchestra for Ach\, ich fühl’s\, from the opera\, in which Pamina expresses her anxiety for Tamino’s safety. \nVisit the Resonance Ensemble website \nand follow us on Facebook \nhttps://events.humanitix.com/resonance-ensemble-wayfarers?mc_cid=1ee493ea1f&mc_eid=23f036a21e

SUMMARY:CSO Lamb & Hayward Curator's Series presents "Buchanan\, Tchaikovsky\, Beethoven"
DESCRIPTION:CSO Lamb & Hayward Curator’s Series presents “Buchanan\, Tchaikovsky\, Beethoven” on Friday 12th September 2025\, 7.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nDorothy Buchanan’s Peace Fanfare was commissioned as part of Auckland Philharmonia’s celebration of the new millennium – a moment many of us will remember – alongside ten other Aotearoa New Zealand composers. \nCellist Heather Lewis features as soloist for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme\, a work that showcases Tchaikovsky’s love of the classicism of Mozart and Haydn. Audiences will be taken through a delightful set of variations on an elegant 18th century-inspired theme\, which was originally written for Tchaikovsky’s colleague Wilhelm Fitzenhagen. \nWe round out this programme with a symphonic icon. With Beethoven’s first symphony we meet a composer showing respect for his teachers\, Mozart and Haydn\, while also daring to innovate. He features the woodwinds in a way that we don’t blink at today but would have been quite audacious in 1800. This masterpiece is one of the first paving stones on a path that reinvented the symphony for future generations. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nHeather Lewis Cello\nDorothy Buchanan Peace Fanfare\nTchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Op. 33\nBeethoven Symphony No. 1 in C Major Op. 2
