SUMMARY:CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents "Harris\, Beethoven"
DESCRIPTION:CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents “Harris\, Beethoven” on Saturday 8th November 2025\, 7.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nThe Lamb & Hayward Masterworks season finale takes us from dark into the light. We bring you the world premiere of Aotearoa composer Ross Harris’ Symphony No. 8 for strings and percussion\, written as a musical response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the devastation that has followed. A dark string lament is punctured by violent instrumental outcries\, but it is a symphony not without hopeful moments of melodic beauty. \nThis concert pairing speaks to the world in which we live\, while harking back to a world where hope was brought to life through music. Beethoven’s grand ninth symphony features the famous choral finale\, with text from Friedrich Schiller’s poem\, Ode to Joy\, which speaks to the triumph of human unity. \nWith thanks to PKF Goldsmith Fox\,\nCSO Soloist Partner\, and Young Hunter Lawyers\, CSO Chorus Partner. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nRhiannon Cooper Soprano\nAshlyn Tymms Alto\nRidge Ponini Tenor\nSamuel McKeever Bass\nRachel Fuller Chorus Director\nCatrin Johnsson Chorus Director\nCSO Chorus\nRoss Harris Symphony No. 8\nBeethoven Symphony No. 9 in D minor Op. 12

After meeting and playing together for the first time at a folk festival during Sonia’s first visit to New Zealand on a solo round-the-world trip in December 2014\, the pair have since become a well-loved duo in the New Zealand music scene and beyond – sharing songs as a vehicle for peace\, joy\, laughter\, healing and community-building; celebrating beauty\, love\, life and ecology through their music. \nThere are two ticket pricing options – a general admission ticket (from $10 – $25 per person)\, and a table option. Born and raised in Paris\, UK-educated and now based in Auckland\, the Franco-American singer\, songwriter and musician had a dizzying musical apprenticeship. A member of both gospel and Acapella choirs from a young age\, her music has taken her from the streets of Paris\, across the Kenyan savannah\, through remote Himalayan villages\, and then ’home’ to New Zealand. When she’s not performing\, Sonia teaches\, offering classes in individual and group ukulele\, guitar and vocals.” (Peter Malcouronne\, Ockham Collective)\nhttps://ockhamcollective.org.nz/r-sonia-wilson \n“Nigel Gavin is a multi award winning musician. Initially a visitor from Long Island\, New York\, now a Kiwi\, Nigel has long been a featured player in New Zealand’s music scene\, playing 7-string guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, bass – indeed\, almost anything with strings – with the Nairobi Trio\, the Fondue Set\, the Jews Brothers\, the Blue Bottom Stompers\, Lorina Harding\, Wayne Gillespie\, Whirimako Black\, Jonathan Besser & Bravura among others. He has also found time to create and mentor the multi-guitar ensemble Gitbox Rebellion. Gavin is a guitarist with remarkable versatility who is respected by other players around the world\, and who excites audiences with jaw-dropping solos. He continues to work internationally in New Zealand\, Europe\, Australia and the United States.”\nhttps://www.audioculture.co.nz/profile/nigel-gavin \nEmail: info@artscentre.org.nz \nLink: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/a-french-musical-soiree-with-sonia-and-nigel/

SUMMARY:Risingholme Orchestra presents "EEK! Spooky Music for Halloweeners"
DESCRIPTION:RISINGHOLME ORCHESTRA PRESENTS \nEEK! Spooky Music for Halloweeners \nSunday 2 November 2025\,  2.00pm at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street \nFor tickets visit https://events.humanitix.com/eek \nEEK! Final A4 Risingholme Orchestra \nRisingholme Orchestra invites you to our concert based on music evoking supernatural subjects\, starting with Heinrich Marschner’s “Overture” to his opera Der Vampyr. \nA blast from the past follows with the death-throes of the lead vampire in Stiff Luck for the Undertaker – a comic operetta with music by Philip Norman\, written in 1974.  \nCamille Saint-Saëns’s symphonic poem Danse Macabre ups the ante in the ghoul stakes as skeletons perform frenzied dances\, egged on by the Devil’s solo violin. \nThe Complete Harry Potter comprises a medley of music themes compiled from the phenomenally popular series of eight fantasy films which appeared between 2001 and 2011.  \nThe second half of the concert opens with “Time Warp” from the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some 100 years earlier Gustav Mahler was putting the finishing touches to his epic Symphony No. 1 (Titan); and today we play an excerpt from the 3rd movement. \nBernard Herrmann’s three-movement Vertigo Suite from Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name centres on the theme of obsession; “Marley’s Aria” from Philip Norman’s A Christmas Carol is sung by the ghost of Scrooge’s former business partner. \nOur concert concludes with the suitably rambunctious “Witches’ Round Dance” from the Finale of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

DESCRIPTION:Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre presents “Luca Ciarla solOrkestra Jazz Violin 2.0” on Tuesday 28th October 2025\, 7.00 p.m to 8.15 p.m. in the Great Hall\, Arts Centre\, Worcester Boulevard\, Christchurch \nPricing: $25.00 | $35.00 \nLuca Ciarla redraws the borders of jazz violin with a loop pedal\, his voice and a wise use of electronics. He performs the entire score of his band in solo\, playing the violin also like a guitar\, a cello or a percussion instrument. In this imaginative musical landscape Luca sings\, whistles\, plays other instruments or adds new improvisations; music is continuously evolving into a dazzling solOrkestra. The program Jazz Violin 2.0 features original compositions and unusual arrangements of jazz standards. “…his post-Coltrane approach to ‘My Favorite Things’ was a clever way to twit a jazz classic…” The San Francisco Examiner (USA) \nEmail: info@artscentre.org.nz \nLink: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/whats-on/luca-ciarla/

SUMMARY:CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents "Holmes\, Chindamo\, Tchaikovsky"
DESCRIPTION:CSO Lamb & Hayward Masterworks presents “Holmes\, Chindamo\, Tchaikovsky” on Saturday 27th September 2025\, 7.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nAotearoa composer Leonie Holmes wrote Ancient Rhythms twenty years ago\, inspired by the poem The Journey by Tessa Stephens. The last time CSO performed it the reviewer said\, “it had genuine expressive appeal…rhythms\, textures and sonorities that seemed to awaken our animal instincts\, and we responded accordingly.” \nAustralian jazz pianist and composer Joe Chindamo has been described as “a musical polyglot in the tradition of Bernstein and Previn.” Audiences are gifted a rare treat with his new trombone concerto\, which explores the literary world of Edgar Allen Poe through music. Our soloist is the brilliant Colin Prichard\, Principal Trombone of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra\, who premiered the jaw-dropping work in 2022. \nTchaikovsky’s fifth symphony takes us back in time\, while simultaneously showing us how timeless the great symphonic works can be – the epitome of a blockbuster symphony that shows off all sections of the orchestra. This is a masterwork for lifetime symphonic fans and newcomers to the orchestra alike; you can’t help but be swept away. \nWith thanks to PKF Goldsmith Fox\nCSO Soloist Partner. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nColin Prichard Trombone\nLeonie Holmes Ancient Rhythms\nJoe Chindamo ‘Ligeia’ Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra\nTchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 in E minor\, Op. 64
