SUMMARY:Simon O'Neill in Concert with Woolston Brass
DESCRIPTION:John Rhind presents Simon O’Neill in Concert with Woolston Brass\nFriday 8 November\, 7.30pm\, James Hay Theatre\, Tickets available from Ticketek\, click HERE\nSunday 10 November\, 2.00pm\, Ashburton Trust Event Centre\, Tickets available from TicketDirect\, click HERE \nProudly sponsored by John Rhind\, international tenor star Simon O’Neill joins Christchurch’s iconic Woolston Brass under the direction of Music Director Tyme Marsters to perform tenor classics and raise funds for the band’s future home. \nNew Zealand born\, Simon O’Neill has established himself as one of the finest helden-tenors on the international stage. He has frequently performed with the Metropolitan Opera\, the Royal Opera House\, Covent Garden\, Berlin\, Hamburg and Bayerische Staatsopern\, Teatro alla Scala and the Bayreuth\, Salzburg\, Edinburgh and BBC Proms Festivals\, appearing with a number of illustrious conductors. \nThe Woolston Brass Band has been in existence for 128 years and is the most successful and recognised band in New Zealand. Woolston Brass consists of over thirty musicians drawn from a variety of professions and ages brought together by a creative talent for making music. The band has remained true to the ideal expressed in its Maori motto\, Tohea kia kaha (Persevere\, so there is Strength). \nSimon O’Neill is proudly donating his voice to help Woolston Brass raise funds for the new band hall. The fundraising concerts being held Friday 8 November at the Christchurch James Hay Theatre and Sunday 10 November at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre will feature tenor classics such as traditional Irish ballad Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)\, Caruso written by Italian composer Dalla\, the famous Swedish Folk Song (How Great Thou Art) and the iconic aria Largo Al Factotum from Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. Woolston Brass will also perform contemporary brass band works such as Tom Davoren’s Phoenix Rising and the movement Phoenix from Peter Graham’s War of the Worlds Suite\, both of these works emulate the rise of a Phoenix from the ashes of destruction. \nWoolston Brass will perform a major composition A Brussels Requiem composed by Bert Appermont that reflects on the tragic circumstances of the terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital in 2016. In light of this year’s terrorist attacks in Christchurch it also pays a personal tribute to the innocent lives lost in recent times. \nThe unique blend of Simon O’Neill’s outstanding tenor voice and the brass sounds from one of New Zealand’s finest brass bands is a treat for the ears and an opportunity not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Waiata ki te wai - Songs for water
DESCRIPTION:Waiata ki te wai \nSongs for water  \nWednesday 13 November \n12pm – 1.15pm \n211 Oxford Tce\, on the banks of the Ōtākaro River \n(between Colombo & Manchester Sts near the Town Hall) \nWet weather venue: Christchurch Town Hall \nFree public event \nYou are all invited to come & sit together on the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon River at lunchtime on Wed 13 November to acknowledge the rivers of Waitaha/Canterbury through song & weaving. While kairaranga weave harakeke\, we will sing waiata together\, and listen to karakia\, stories & music that celebrate this life-sustaining water that connects us all. \nThis is part of Yo-Yo Ma’s Bach Project in Christchurch\, which explores how culture actively shapes a better future\, and involves Yo-Yo performing with talented musicians and weavers of Ōtautahi. Marlon Williams will do a special performance with Yo-Yo Ma. Also performing are Sistah Waitoa\, Project Miere\, Aporonia Arahanga\, a group of instrumentalists led by Tamara Smith\, Ruby Solly\, and Phil Dadson. \nThe wet weather venue for the event is the Christchurch Town Hall. Please keep an eye on Te Pūtahi’s social media accounts for the latest information. \nWaiata ki te wai is conceived by artists Juliet Arnott of Rekindle and Kerepeti Paraone (Kāi Tahu\, Kāti Māmoe\, Waitaha\, Ngāti Kahungunu\, Ngāti Hine)\, commissioned by Yo-Yo Ma and produced by Te Pūtahi – Christchurch centre for architecture and city-making in collaboration with Tier One events. \nImportant information: \nFor those who can\, we’d prefer it if you sat on the ground for this event. Bring a rug or mat to sit on. There is limited space for chairs\, so if you need to bring a chair\, or use a wheelchair\, please arrive early to secure a place. Chairs will be seated at the rear. \nIf you are approaching the event site from another part of the city\, on foot or bicycle\, to acknowledge your connection with water and rivers we suggest you walk or cycle along the Ōtākaro Avon river to arrive at the event. \nTwo of the waiata are for everyone at the event to sing – including you! The first is Purea Nei\, a well known waiata adapted by Hirini Melbourne from a waiata written by Henare Mahanga. The second is Te Wai Tuku Kiri\, a local waiata composed by Te Rita Papesch and adapted by Puamiria Parata‐Goodall for Te Taumutu Rūnanga. All the musicians who are performing at Waiata ki te wai will be playing the second waiata. \nPlease find the lyrics for the waiata-a-rōpu (group waiata) attached. You can also follow along with these YouTube videos: \nPurea Nei \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWwrdRjkDA \nTe wai tuku kiri \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJb57lc-hfk&list=RDhJb57lc-hfk&index=2 \nFacebook Event \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1285002008354088/
