SUMMARY:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Masterworks "Debussy\, Bartok\, Brahms"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Masterworks “Debussy\, Bartok\, Brahms” on Saturday 17th May 2025\, 7.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nDebussy’s sensual Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun opens with a shimmering masterpiece of impressionism that envelopes the listener in a dreamlike haze. \nDiscover the emotive power of Bartók’s Viola Concerto\, performed by CSO Principal Viola Serenity Thurlow. Composed during Bartók’s final years\, the piece blends lyrical beauty with folk-inspired energy. Thurlow’s expressive mastery will illuminate the rich\, intricate harmonies and captivating rhythms in this brilliant showcase for the viola. \nToday we consider Johannes Brahms a heavyweight of the Romantic period. In his time however\, he was following in the huge footsteps of Beethoven\, and he toiled over his first symphony for almost 20 years before being satisfied with it. Balancing tradition and innovation\, Brahms’ orchestral writing \nis beloved by audiences for its expression and emotion. \nWith thanks to PKF Goldsmith Fox\, \nCSO Soloist Partner. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nSerenity Thurlow Viola\nDebussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (L. 86) Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\nBartók Viola Concerto Sz. 120 BB 128\nBrahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68
