SUMMARY:Thomson and Ibell Duo
DESCRIPTION:Thomson and Ibell Duo present “Dynamic recital for piano & cello” on Saturday 20th April 2024\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at Piano House\, 283 Riccarton Road\, Christchurch \nPricing:  Tickets are $30.00 General Admission\, $25.00 Concessions\, $10.00 Students\, $60.00 Families (2 Adults + 2 Children) available from Eventfinda (service fees apply) or at the door from 7.00 p.m. \nTwo well-known Wellington-based musicians\, Rachel Thomson (piano) and Robert Ibell (cello)\, present a varied and dynamic programme of works for cello and piano spanning two hundred years at the Piano House\, 283 Riccarton Rd\, Christchurch\, on Saturday 20 April at 7:30 pm. \nBeginning their concert is Beethoven’s fifth and last sonata for piano and cello\, a visionary and lyrical work from 1815 that signalled the beginning of the ‘late period’ in his output. This is followed by the magical Pohádka (Fairy Tale) by Czech composer Janáček. The first half closes with three exquisite short works by Schumann: his Fantasy Pieces Op 73. \nAfter interval come four short and characterful pieces written in 2017 by Alex Taylor\, an award-winning composer from Aotearoa. Two sonatas from the twentieth century complete the programme: Kodaly’s two movement Sonata for Cello & Piano Op 4\, with its folk-influenced melodies and Debussyan harmonies is followed by Debussy’s brief Sonata for Cello & Piano from 1915. This work\, with its ecstatic outbursts and dark humour\, is strongly influenced by commedia dell’arte. It provides an exciting and satisfying end to the concert. \nAbout the artists \nRachel Thomson – piano \nRachel Thomson enjoys a varied career as a chamber musician\, teacher and collaborative pianist. She began her piano studies with her mother before continuing with Judith Clark\, going on to complete a B.Mus (Hons) and a BA in English Literature at Victoria University. As a recipient of both an Arts Council grant and a Fulbright Graduate Award\, she went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music\, gaining a Masters then Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance. \nRachel has won various awards both at home and in the United States\, including the NZ National Concerto Competition (1993) and the East Central Division of the MTNA Young Artist Competition (USA\, 1997). Since her return to New Zealand Rachel has been part of a number of ensembles to tour under the auspices of Chamber Music New Zealand. More recently she has formed the Koru Trio\, a piano trio with NZSO members Anne Loeser and Sally Isaac. \nRachel has been a national recording artist for Concert FM\, and also recorded for Trust Records with flutist Bridget Douglas. She has worked as an orchestral pianist with the NZSO for many years\, and is currently Principal Keyboard with Orchestra Wellington. She runs a busy teaching studio in Wellington\, and is an active member of the IRMTNZ. She is also a music examiner for Trinity College London. \nRobert Ibell – cello \nRobert Ibell was born in Dannevirke and brought up in Palmerston North. While training there as a school teacher he learned cello from Judith Hyatt in Wellington. \nFrom 1986 to 1992 Robert lived in London\, studying cello with Tania Hunt\, Derek Simpson and Christopher Bunting. He played at music schools and masterclasses (where his teachers included Alexander Baillie\, Steve Doane\, Anner Bylsma and Steven Isserlis)\, taught\, gave recitals and played in amateur and professional orchestras\, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra. \nFrom 1993 to 2019 Robert was a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He is now a cello and bass teacher\, Council member for IRMTNZ\, chamber music coach\, adjudicator and freelance performer. Robert is a member of the Aroha String Quartet\, square piano/cello duo Hammers & Horsehair\, the Papaioea Piano Trio\, flute/cello/piano trio Aurum and indie/folk/rock band Milkthistle

SUMMARY:CSO presents "Mozart\, Part\, Delius\, Stravinsky"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents “Mozart\, Part\, Delius\, Stravinsky” on Friday 5th April 2024\, 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nMozart needs little introduction – his overture to the 1787 opera Don Giovanni is one of the most hard-hitting openings in opera\, setting the scene for one of the art form’s most powerfully elusive protagonists to take the stage. Estonian composer Arvo Pärt was deeply affected by the news of Benjamin Britten’s death in 1976\, and dedicated this work to him\, with Pärt’s famous minimalist style bringing a depth of emotion to the surface that is mesmerising. Our percussion section features in a setting of Delius’ charming On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring for two marimbas and vibraphone. \nStravinsky wrote the music for Les Ballet Russes’ production of Pulcinella alongside fellow artistic heavyweights of the time choreographer Sergei Diaghilev and set/costume designer Pablo Picasso. Stravinsky was asked to take inspiration from 18th century Italian musical styles – in a way that makes this music sound rather ‘familiar’ to classical music audiences. Pulcinella is a character who originated in 17th century commedia dell’arte\, and this chamber orchestra-sized suite version of Pulcinella was premiered in 1922; several years after the full ballet. \nBenjamin Northey: Chief Conductor\nMozart: Overture to Don Giovanni\nPärt: Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten\nDelius arr. SUMMARY:Resonance Ensemble presents "Spirit of the Land"
DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “Spirit of the Land” on Sunday 24th March 2024\, 3.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch\n\nColour\, spectacle and richly soul-stirring expression are on offer as Resonance Ensemble\, conducted by Tony Ryan\, presents the music of Sibelius\, Smetana and Weber at our first concert for 2024 on Sunday March 24\, at The Piano. \nWe open this concert with the overture to Carl Maria von Weber’s last opera\, Oberon\, which was first performed in London in 1826. This short overture remains one of Weber’s most popular and colourful works\, and the opera’s story about spirits and magic is brought vividly to life by Weber’s lively music.\nCzech composer Smetana wrote music that expresses his deep connection with his homeland. His cycle of six symphonic poems Ma Vlast (‘My Fatherland’) is filled with the spirit of Bohemia’s folksongs and dances. Our concert features two movements from Smetana’s masterpiece. The second poem\, Vltava (‘The Moldau’)\, describes the great river’s journey through the Czech countryside. The third movement tells the story of the female warrior Šárka\, a central figure in ancient Czech legend.Sibelius’s glorious Symphony No. 3 is not only one of the Finnish composer’s finest but also one of his most heartfelt and personal works. Completed in 1907 when Finland was still struggling for independence from Russian control\, Sibelius filled it with the heart and soul of his homeland. \nHere are Spotify links to samples of each piece: \nCarl Maria von Weber     Overture to Oberon\, J. 306Bedřich Smetana    Vltava (The Moldau)\, No. 2 from Má Vlast (My Country) \nBedřich Smetana      Šárka\, No 3 from Má vlast \nJean Sibelius  Symphony No 3:\nFirst movement (Allegro moderato)\nSecond movement (Andantino con moto\, quasi allegretto)\nThird movement (Moderato—Allegro ma non tanto\, con energia)\n\nTickets for this concert are available online at Humanitix\, with no booking fee.   \nCheck out the Resonance Ensemble website and follow us on Facebook

SUMMARY:CSO presents "Grenfell\, Tchaikovsky\, Bartok"
DESCRIPTION:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents “Grenfell\, Tchaikovsky\, Bartok” on Saturday 23rd March 2024\, 7.30 p.m. (2 hours) in Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nWe celebrate the vibrant career of Ōtautahi born composer Maria Grenfell with her work Stealing Tutunui. She brings to life the Māori story of the chief Tinirau\, his whale Tutunui\,and the sinister Kae\, using the many colours of the orchestra. \nDescribed as “easily the most compelling pianist of his generation\,” Ukrainian-born Australian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk is internationally recognized for his electrifying performances. Currently Artist in Residence at Wigmore Hall\, London\, he joins CSO to perform Tchaikovsky’s majestic Piano Concerto No. 1 – a popular favourite for concert pianists and audiences around the world. \nEach section of CSO will take a turn in the spotlight during Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra – a masterpiece that highlights what we all love about the orchestra. It shows off the many sides to Bartók’s style: melodic charm\, shadowy intensity\, moments of rhythmic party music\, and a notable ‘Game of Couples’ movement\, where the families of woodwind and brass present themselves in pairs\, offering a truly musical parade of our local talent. \nBenjamin Northey:  Chief Conductor\nAlexander Gavrylyuk:  Piano\nMaria Grenfell:  Stealing Tutunui\nTchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B minor\, Op. 23\nBartók:  Concerto for Orchestra \nWebsite: http://www.cso.co.nz
