SUMMARY:CSO presents "Lilburn\, Faure"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents “Lilburn\, Faure” on Saturday 7th September 2024\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nThe Douglas Lilburn Auditorium – the beloved home of CSO – will reverberate with the sounds of its namesake Douglas Lilburn’s First Symphony\, a work written in 1949 by the composer often referred to as the ‘grandfather’ of New Zealand music.’ This is the ideal way to immerse yourself in the soundscape of the New Zealand classical music origin story.  CSO Chorus are a highlight of every season\, and this year they will shine bright in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem – a serene work filled with beautiful melodies that was even performed at the composer’s own funeral exactly 100 years ago. Many composers before him had penned requiems\, and Fauré described his own as being “dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith and eternal rest.”  Audiences will be treated to two of the most impressive solo voices of our time: Aotearoa New Zealand-based Australian soprano Emma Pearson\, and baritone Roderick Williams – one of the UK’s most sought-after baritones\, who recently featured at the Coronation of King Charles III\, the BBC Proms\, as well as on stages around the world.  \nCSO Chorus is proudly supported by Young Hunter Lawyers. \nBenjamin Northey:  Chief Conductor\nEmma Pearson:  Soprano\nRoderick Williams:  Baritone\nRachel Fuller:  Chorus Director\nCatrin Johnsson:  Chorus Director\nCSO Chorus\nLilburn Symphony No. 1\nFauré Requiem Op. 4 \nWebsite: http://www.cso.co.nz

SUMMARY:CSO presents "Shatford\, Strauss\, Mozart"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents “Shatford\, Strauss\, Mozart” on Friday 20th September 2024\, 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThis musical curation is a celebration of youthful talent. We welcome you to open your ears to the sound world of Ōtautahi-born composer Isaac Shatford. He says of this new commission: “Open is such a fabulous word. It’s exciting – an opening is a beginning\, an opportunity. It’s terrifying – openness is uncertainty\, vulnerability. This piece balances\, fleetingly\, on that precarious tipping point.” Our very own Principal Horn Emma Eden takes centre stage in Richard Strauss’ ebullient Horn Concerto No. 1. Strauss may have only been 18 when he began work on this concerto\, but his childhood had included a particularly full immersion into the world of the horn – his father was the Principal Horn of the Munich Court Orchestra. Mozart wrote his first symphony at the age of eight\, and had stacked up many more before his death at the age of just 35. His penultimate No. 40 is one of his most popular symphonies\, full of dark passion and swagger. The themes are often used in film\, television\, and popular culture including the opening phrase becoming one of the most iconic ringtones of the earliest mobile phones. \nBenjamin Northey: Chief Conductor\nEmma Eden: Horn\nIsaac Shatford: Open\nStrauss: Horn Concerto No. 1 in E Major Op. 11\nMozart:  Symphony No. 40 in G minor K. 550 \nWebsite: http://www.cso.co.nz

SUMMARY:Resonance Ensemble presents "Bohemian Rhapsody - Music from Czechia & Hungary"
DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “Bohemian Rhapsody – Music from Czechia & Hungary” on Sunday 22nd September 2024\, 3.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nPricing: Adults $30 & $25 | Students $12.59 | Child $5.00 \nTickets available through https://events.humanitix.com/resonance-ensemble-bohemian-rhapsody \nResonance Ensemble and conductor Tony Ryan delve into some of the finest if less well-known music from Bohemia\, with works by Antonin Dvořák\, Josef Suk and Ernst von Dohnányi.Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 is notably more dramatic than the more widely-known New World Symphony\, and its abundance of inspired melody\, colourful Slavic orchestration and expressive intensity make it one of the finest symphonies of the nineteenth century. Although the New World is probably Dvořák’s best-known work alongside his ever-popular Slavonic Dances\, Serenade for Strings and Songs My Mother Taught Me\, to name a few\, many consider Symphony No. 7 to be one of the composer’s finest creations. If Dvořák’s Silent Woods for solo cello and orchestra is less well-known\, it remains one of his most beautiful and lyrical shorter pieces. Silent Woods has been performed and recorded by many famous soloists\, and in this concert Resonance Ensemble’s wonderful principal cellist Janet Cubey joins their ranks.Josef Suk was not only Dvořák’s favourite pupil\, but he also became the older composer’s son-in-law when he married Dvořák’s daughter Otilie. Suk’s Fantastic Scherzo was written in 1903\, the year before Dvořák died and\, like his teacher’s music\, it demonstrates a similar melodic flair as well as a wide range of colourful and spectacular orchestral effects.Although Ernst von Dohnányi is known as a Hungarian composer\, the shifting boundaries of Eastern European countries resulted in his birthplace (now Bratislava) becoming part of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Dohnányi’s 1909 ballet The Veil of Pierette contains some of his most appealing music\, and Resonance Ensemble gives the New Zealand premiere of the ballet’s delightful Waltz\, to complete yet another of the orchestra’s uniquely imaginative and innovative programmes.

SUMMARY:Alexandra Hope Watson - A Magical Musical Mystery: In Concert with CSO
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Hope Watson – A Magical Musical Mystery: In Concert with CSO on Saturday 28th September 2024\, 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nPricing: $20.00 | $55.00 \nLet me introduce myself\, I am a New Zealand soprano\, composer\, lyricist and arranger. I started my Doctor of Musical Arts in October 2023\, studying Composition\, having completed my Master of Arts (180 points) in Music with Distinction in June 2023. I am delighted to be working in collaboration with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra later this month for the world premiere of my second musical A Magical Musical Mystery. The musical is based on the nonsense verse of Lewis Carroll and follows a consciousness as it wanders through its own dream landscape\, which manifests as a young girl. \nAs a child I fell in love with Alice in Wonderland\, arguably Lewis Carroll’s most famous work\, I was also introduced to Jabberwocky\, one of the most well-known poems from the Nonsense Verse collection. From here I explored the different poems and the variety of characters and animals that Lewis Carroll created. The different characters throughout Nonsense Verse spark the imagination with their quirks and unique personalities. \nWhen I revisited this collection of poems as I matured\, I could hear the different characters come to life through my music. Setting the poetry to the music brings the dream landscape to life in a unique way. It draws you into the words and inspires the tone and variety of sounds and reflects the different characters throughout. \nI created the musical A Magical Musical Mystery to celebrate the Nonsense Verse of Lewis Carroll and I invite you all to join me at The Piano on Saturday 28 September 2024. I have thoroughly enjoyed orchestrating for a 32-piece orchestra and was delighted that Christchurch Symphony Orchestra agreed to premiere this musical In Concert at The Piano. There will be 2 concerts one at 3pm and one at 7pm. I am also very pleased to welcome Naomi Hnat on her return to Christchurch as conductor together with Naomi Ferguson (soloist)\, John Bayne (soloist) and Helen Grout (solo saxophonist). \nI was very pleased and proud to receive the support of Creative New Zealand\, as a recipient of their Early Career Fund in The Arts and I also thank my sponsors Archibalds Christchurch\, Pump & Valve\, and Madisons for their contribution to this project. \nI look forward to seeing you embrace the magic and let your imagination run wild! \nContact person: Alexandra Watson \nEmail: hello@alexandrahope.co.nz \nLink: https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/a-magical-musical-mystery-in-concert-with-cso/christchurch
