DESCRIPTION:Resonance Ensemble presents “A Tuba at the Jockey Club” on Sunday 4th July 2021 at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThomas Allely\, principal tuba of The Queensland Symphony Orchestra is traveling from Brisbane specially to play with this excellent local orchestra in the première of conductor Tony Ryan’s newly revised Tuba Concerto. The concerto was originally written for Thomas when he was still a school student in Christchurch and which he played with the NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra in Auckland. \nRyan describes the revision of his concerto as an almost complete re-write which recognises the exceptionally advanced virtuoso and musical abilities of this now widely-experienced soloist\, and the talented players of the Resonance Ensemble orchestra. \nThe remainder of the concert is devoted to music that was influenced by the Paris Jockey Club in the nineteenth century when Paris was one of the great musical capitals of Europe\, with French opera at the forefront in terms of spectacle and grandeur\, especially with its inclusion of elaborate dance interludes. \nThe young\, egocentric aristocrats of the Jockey Club insisted on the insertion of these extravaganzas and would disrupt proceedings if they didn’t get an opportunity to see their favourite ballerinas on the stage. Mozart achieves revolutionary statements on multiple levels much in keeping with Enlightenment ideas about the role of women and men in society and politics. The opera ends with a statement of compassion and forgiveness much needed at the start of this Century. \nNew Zealand Opera has invited director Lindy Hume to create a new production that explores feminist ideas in Mozart’s opera\, part of a series that has preoccupied her artistic practice in recent years. Zoe Zeniodi will conduct the opera. Eleanor Bishop will assistant direct. It is anticipated this team will explore Figaro’s potent politics in the rehearsal room and that the opera will be a catalyst for conversation on women directors and conductors in opera. \nThe production will play in its original language (Italian) with English surtitles. \nThe opera will feature the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus\, along with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. \nDuration: The performance is 3 hours long with a 20-minute interval. \nSurtitles: This opera is sung in Italian with English surtitles. \nComposed by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart \nLibretto by: Lorenzo Da Ponte

DESCRIPTION:Christopher Marshall has supported young musicians for a long time.  This concert has been added to our programme to formally recognise Christopher’s support of these musicians. \nEach year we will showcase a promising young performer or performers.  One of the purposes of this concert is to provide a grant to contribute to their future development. \nOur first recipient is Christchurch’s own Lixin Zhang.  Anyone who has heard him play will agree that he is an exciting young pianist. \nLixin Zhang (piano) in concert on Thursday 22nd July 2021 at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nProgramme: \nChopin – Mazurkas\, op. 24\nChopin – Sonata no. 3 in B minor\, op. 58\nChopin – 24 Preludes\, op. 28 \nLixin Zhang is 19 and is currently studying with Michael Endres and Neville Baird.  Starting this fall\, Lixin will be studying at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles in the studio of Fabio Bidini.  Lixin was first recognised nationally at the age of eleven for his musical achievements.  Since then\, he has gone on to win top prizes at each of New Zealand’s major national piano competitions including the National Young Performer Award\, Wallace National Piano Competition and the National Concerto Competition.  Lixin has also given performances in Asia and Europe.  Rattle Records released Lixin’s first CD in 2018\, which promptly shot to first place in Radio NZ’s Classical Charts.  For this concert\, Lixin has selected some of his favourite works written by the romantic composer Frederic Chopin.

Violinist\, Justine Cormack\, cellist\, James Bush\, and pianist\, Sarah Watkins\, all grew up together in Christchurch\, and their bonds run deep. \nJustine and James grew up across the road from each other\, learning music together at the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music. There\, as teenagers\, Sarah and Justine first played chamber music together. The bond carried them into their careers – Sarah and James toured with CMNZ in 1996\, and they first performed in this trio configuration in 1997. Justine and Sarah went on to work closely together as founding members of the NZTrio. James took a different tack\, his fascination with the freedom and energy of baroque performance practice leading him to work with many of Europe’s top baroque orchestras and ensembles. \nVieux Amis present a programme that marries their diverse areas of expertise\, cohering as a concert of vim and elegance. The links between Bach\, Pärt and Shostakovich couldn’t be clearer.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Kia ora\, \nOn Sunday 15 August we’re flinging open the doors of the Christchurch Town Hall and welcoming musicians of all levels and ages from throughout the community to join us in our home for The Big Play Out music festival. \nWe’re making the day fun\, jam-packed and free. To ensure that everyone who wants to take part can\, we’d love your support. \nSo\, we’ve partnered up with Boost Ōtautahi and the Rātā Foundation to run a crowdfunding campaign throughout June to help towards the venue and production costs. \nEvery little bit helps. Whether it’s $5 or $500 every donation will be matched dollar for dollar\, up to the value of $3\,000\, by Rātā Foundation. \nYour support would be invaluable and this is what it will help us to provide: \n\nPiano recitals on the Merle Carter Steinway Piano by pianists of every age and level.\nPerformance showcase for community groups to play for each other in a friendly and supportive environment.\nA massed orchestra of 800 strong performing in the world-renowned accoustics of the Christchurch Town Hall’s Douglas Lilburn Auditorium under the baton of CSO Chief Conductor Benjamin Northey.\n\nIt’s a great opportunity for musicians\, from ages nine to ninety nine\, to come together and celebrate our shared love of music. We expect more than 2\,000 people to come through our doors to enjoy this day of music-making\, whether as performers or audience members. \nWe really appreciate whatever help you can give us through donating and sharing our campaign with others. \n\n\n\nClick here to support The Big Play Out
