SUMMARY:Christchurch City Choir presents "Missa Gaia"
DESCRIPTION:Christchurch City Choir presents “Missa Gaia” on Saturday 13th June 2026\, 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nPricing: $15 | $80 \nLimited Early Bird Tickets are now available! \nJoin the Christchurch City Choir for a powerful celebration of the Earth and the musical inspiration it provides. This concert will feature works by Paul Halley and New Zealand composer Leonie Holmes along with the eponymous work Missa Gaia: Earth Mass by Paul Winter. \nMissa Gaia blends the human voice with evocative sounds from nature\, featuring a rich tapestry of percussion\, organ\, clarinet\, and saxophone. While the main music is composed by Paul Winter\, it is customarily accompanied with works by his contemporaries\, so we will be including additional works by Paul Halley. \nThe other major work accompanying this will be Silver Whispers Suite by New Zealand composer Leonie Holmes. It is a suite that celebrates life in its many forms – from the “scuttle of insects to the unearthly song of whales.” \nThis concert offers a vibrant\, celebratory blend of international and local music\, united by the shared wonder and glory of the world we live in. \nContact person: Charlotte Ensor \nEmail: info@citychoir.co.nz \nhttp://www.ticketmaster.co.nz/event/24006488BD5E346F

SUMMARY:Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents "Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: de Castro-Robinson\, Mahler\, Berlioz"
DESCRIPTION:Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: de Castro-Robinson\, Mahler\, Berlioz \nSaturday 1st August 2026 \n7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. \nDouglas Lilburn Auditorium \nChristchurch Town Hall \n\nBenjamin Northey – Chief Conductor \nFaamanu Fonoti-Fuimaono – Baritone \n\nEve de Castro-Robinson – Hour of Lead \nMahler – Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) \nBerlioz – Symphonie fantastique Op. 14 \n  \nWe’re thrilled to perform Aotearoa composer Eve de Castro-Robinson’s compelling Hour of Lead in Te Waipounamu South Island for the first time. It has been described by the composer as “four movements on the notion of pain” and “a sombre reminder of life’s fragility.” A review of its 2024 premiere said\, “the composer\, called to the platform at the end\, seemed like some kind of angelic or otherwise blessed visitant\, come to lift the spell by which her work had held us all in thrall.” \nIn the wake of a tragic heartbreak\, a young Mahler casts himself as the protagonist in his poignant Songs of a Wayfarer. A grief-stricken journeyman wanders aimlessly in nature\, seeking peace but haunted by lost love. Rising Aotearoa baritone Faamanu Fonoti-Fuimaono guides us powerfully\, at times tragically\, through every tender moment. \nBerlioz takes that same heartbreak\, but spins it into a vivid\, hallucinatory drama. Symphonie fantastique marked a musical revolution\, daring in its originality\, scale\, imagination\, and mastery of the macabre. Critics called it “bizarre” and “monstrous” – and meant it as high praise. The intensely cinematic music still resonates\, most famously in the sinister opening of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. \nWith thanks to CSO Soloist Partner PKF Goldsmith Fox\, and CSO Library Supporter Gwyn Rogers (Berlioz). \nhttps://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2026/cso-lamb-hayward-masterworks/christchurch

After just six years of formal training\, Iris has already achieved her ATCL in piano and distinguished herself with her musicality\, rhythm\, and dedication. \nIris Liu\, aged 14\, is currently a Year 10 student at Burnside High School. She began learning the piano at the age of eight under the guidance of Yi Sun\, and she is currently also studying with Lixin Zhang. In Year 9\, her exceptional musical ability earned her a place in her school’s SMP Program\, where she has frequently served as a piano accompanist for important school performances\, gaining valuable experience and recognition for her musical sensitivity and reliability. \nBeyond the piano\, Iris has also explored other performing arts. She studied tap dance for three years and street dance for two years. These diverse artistic experiences have enriched her sense of rhythm\, movement\, and stage expression\, bringing vitality and imagination to her musical performances. \nAfter six years of dedication\, passion\, and perseverance\, Iris now steps onto the stage for her very first solo piano recital. This concert marks a significant milestone in 2026 and represents a brilliant and promising beginning of her musical journey. May she continue to follow her passion\, explore new artistic horizons\, and soar ever higher on her musical path. \nThis event is part of the Rising Stars 2026 programme.
