SUMMARY:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Curator's Series "Richter\, Britten\, Shostakovich"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Curator’s Series “Richter\, Britten Shostakovich” on Friday 14th March 2025\, 7.00 p.m. at the The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nThis unique programme pulls together three works written by composers working under the shadow of three different wars. \nMax Richter’s heartbreakingly beautiful On the Nature of Daylight features our string section in a poignant\, minimalist work that has been used on numerous soundtracks in film and television\, where music expresses what words cannot. It features on Richter’s 2004 album The Blue Notebooks\, which he describes as “a protest piece that magnifies that feeling of hopelessness\,” set against the backdrop of the Iraq War. \nBenjamin Britten wrote his Serenade for Tenor\, Horn and Strings during World War Two\, setting a selection of English poems to music\, including works by Alfred\, Lord Tennyson\, William Blake\, and William Shakespeare.  Night\, nature and introspection are all explored.  We welcome our Principal Horn Emma Eden\, and up-and-coming Aotearoa tenor Jordan Fonoti-Fuimaono to our string section for this work. \nThe compelling Chamber Symphony of Shostakovich features a dedication in the manuscript from the composer: “in memory of the victims of fascism and war.” Originally presented as a string quartet\, this full string orchestra version brings a full palette of emotion to the forefront\, from intense darkness through to Shostakovich’s trademark satire and wit. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nJordan Fonoti-Fuimaono Tenor\nEmma Eden Horn \nMax Richter On the Nature of Daylight\nBritten Serenade for Tenor\, Horn\, and Strings Op. 31\nShostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor Op. 110a

SUMMARY:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Masterworks "The Curtain Raiser: Meredith\, Fisher & Kavanagh Poutama\, Rachmaninov
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents Lamb & Hayward Masterworks “The Curtain Raiser: Meredith\, Fisher & Kavanagh Poutama\, Rachmaninov” on Saturday 1st March 2025\, 7.30 p.m. in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium\, Christchurch Town Hall\, Kilmore Street\, Christchurch \nLamb & Hayward Masterworks: The Curtain Raiser kicks off the 2025 season with a bang\,with music by Scottish composer Anna Meredith\, described as “one of the most exciting compositional catalysts of our time.” Equally at home in acoustic and electronic music\, her work Nautilus was originally an\nelectronic track\, and audiences can expect rhythmic drive and excitement. \nŌtautahi audiences will also be treated to work by homegrown composers Salina Fisher and Jerome Kavanagh Poutama\, who lead us into a beautiful soundscape of Aotearoa. This piece honours Papatūānuku (earth mother) as the bearer of all life\, and centres instruments/voices that are closely connected to the natural world. Papatūānuku heroes the mahi of Jerome\, who plays 19 different taonga puoro throughout a work that artfully weaves in orchestral texture and colour. The review from its 2023 premiere described how “one marveled at the hushed beauty he coaxed from various flutes.” \nRachmaninov’s epic second symphony acts as a counterbalance to the concert’s first half. A cornerstone of the repertoire ever since hitting the concert stage in 1908\, this is the ideal live orchestral experience: sometimes stormy and brooding\, sometimes radiant and soaring\, always powerful and full of feeling. \nWith thanks to PKF Goldsmith Fox\,\nCSO Soloist Partner. \nBenjamin Northey Chief Conductor\nJerome Kavanagh Poutama Taonga puoro\nAnna Meredith Nautilus\nSalina Fisher & Jerome Kavanagh Poutama Papatūānuku\nRachmaninov Symphony No. 2 in E minor Op. 2 \n
