SUMMARY:Woolston Brass presents "Seriously Brass: A Tale As Yet Untold"
DESCRIPTION:Woolston Brass presents “Seriously Brass: A Tale As Yet Untold” on Saturday 24th August 2024\, 7.30 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch. \nMusic Director:  Tyme Marsters \nGuest Percussion Soloist:  Roanna Funcke \nProgramme: \n\nThe Plantagenets by Edward Gregson\nPercussion Concerto by Jennifer Higdon featuring Guest Percussion Soloist: Roanna Funcke\nHope by Stijn Aertgeert\nA Tale as Yet Untold by Philip Sparke\n\nBook now at Eventfinda https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/…/seriously…/christchurch \nAbout Seriously Brass: A Tale As Yet Untold \nTalented Woolston Brass with Music Director Tyme Marsters brings you Seriously Brass: A Tale As Yet Untold on Saturday 24 August 7.30pm at The Piano featuring Guest Percussion Soloist Roanna Funcke. Associate Principal Percussionist of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and sought-after Percussion Tutor and Performer\, Roanna has toured internationally with the National Band of New Zealand and Woolston Brass. Don’t miss this special concert showcasing exceptional talent and remarkable music! \nWoolston Brass will open the programme with Edward Gregson’s first major test piece The Plantagenets\, written for the 1973 National Brass Band Championships. This virtuosic symphonic study of rhythmic and melodic variety portrays the majestic mood and feelings of an age of chivalry – that of the House of Plantagenet which lasted from the middle of the twelfth century to the end of the fourteenth. \nWoolston Brass combined with outstanding Guest Soloist Roanna Funcke will perform Percussion Concerto written by Jennifer Higdon. Premiered in 2005 by the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the work has been transcribed for brass band by Pablo Ruiz Henao for this special performance. Higdon makes wondrous use of percussion in all its wide spectrum of sounds and unleashes a kinetic storm of urban beats balanced by passages of Asian-influenced reflections. \nWoolston Brass will perform Stijn Aertgeerts’ reflective work Hope that symbolises and portrays hope and love\, and the belief in humanity to come out stronger than everything that drives us apart\, ultimately working towards a better world. Woolston Brass will conclude the concert with Philip Sparke’s major work A Tale As Yet Untold. The melodic theme set in three movements expresses the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and how the beauty of music can provide the human soul peace\, hope and optimism.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:CSO presents "C.P.E. Bach\, Albinoni\, Haydn"
DESCRIPTION:CSO presents “C.P.E. Bach\, Albinoni\, Haydn” on Friday 26th July 2024 from 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. at The Piano\, 156 Armagh Street\, Christchurch \nTravel back in time to the opulence of the 1700s with accomplished Australian violinist Sophie Rowell as your guide. CSO has curated a trio of works composed during a sixty-year period\, by three doyens of the Baroque and Classical periods.  Music was a real family affair over many generations for the Bach family. Carl Philipp Emmanuel was taught by his father J.S. Bach\, and built an independent career during a time when the orchestra was coming into its own. This Symphony in C Major is packed with zesty energy and elegance.  Albinoni was one of the first Italian composers to write for the oboe – a newly emerging instrument at the time. This concerto is known for its ravishing slow movement\, and our beloved CSO Principal Oboe Jenny Clapp is not to be missed in the role of soloist.  Affectionately referred to as ‘the father of the Symphony\,’ Haydn wrote over 100 of them –\nmany noted for their remarkable originality of form for the time. Haydn’s cheerful 89th Symphony comes from his years working in\nthe court of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy\, and he cleverly mined material from several of his own earlier works\, reassigning it for this sparkling combination of strings and winds.\n\nSophie Rowell: Director/Concertmaster\nJenny Clapp: Oboe\nC.P.E.
